2004 eTopps

Description

2004 eTopps is a series of 120 cards available directly through Topps through their eTopps platform. Starting with the beginning of the 2004 MLB season and continuing through the All-Star break these cards were made available on a weekly basis. A predetermined number of "shares" (ranging from as few as 2000 to as many as 6000) were given for each player based upon Topps estimation of popularity.

Price per card during IPO status typically ranged from approximately $4 per card to $9 per card - again based on popularity. The one week IPO period was the only time these cards were ever offered for sale by Topps and most importantly Topps only printed the exact amount of cards that were ordered during that window of time. For the first time, these print runs are displayed on the reverse side of the card -- although each card is not serial-numbered (i.e. a card that sold 2500 copies will have the statement "LIMITED EDITION OF 2500" on the reverse side).

Collectors had the option to have their cards held by Topps, whereby they could sell them or buy from other collectors (much like one would buy and sell stocks) on the eTopps "floor" - a special section of eBay created for this product, or have the card mailed to them "in hand" for a nominal shipping and handling fee. The eTopps program ended in 2012, and all unclaimed cards are still sitting in a warehouse in Delaware.
