1985 Donruss

Description

The 1985 Donruss baseball card set consists of 660 baseball cards numbered 1-653, and seven un-numbered checklists. Cards 1-26 of the set feature Diamond Kings, and cards 27-46 make up the Rated Rookies. Significant rookies include Roger Clemens, Eric Davis, Dwight Gooden, Orel Hershiser, Kirby Puckett and Bret Saberhagen.

Each pack includes three pieces of a 63-piece Lou Gehrig jigsaw puzzle.

'85 Donruss is infamous for their wear-showing black-borders, and as a result is considered condition sensitive.

Because of quality-control issues, collectors seeking cards suitable for professional grading should consider purchasing a factory set.

Distribution

Wax: 36 packs per box, 15 cards plus one puzzle piece per pack. 20 boxes per wax case.

Racks: 24 racks per box, 45 cards plus three puzzle pieces per pack. Three boxes per rack case.

Factory Sets: 12 sets per case. Hobby only.

Checklist

Jumbo Diamond Kings

A 28-card Jumbo Diamond Kings set (all 26 DK's plus the Checklist and a "History of the Diamond Kings" card of artist Dick Perez exclusive to this set) was available via a wrapper redemption program. To acquire the set, collectors had to send in $9 plus three 1985 Donruss Baseball wrappers. The Jumbo Diamond Kings (which measure 5" X 7") are tough to find as singles, and have become a favorite of autograph collectors.

Wax Box Cards

Each wax box had four "cards" printed on the bottom. With the exception of the Lou Gehrig Puzzle, each is a full reproduction of their regular 1985 Donruss card. Collector's who bought the full wax box had the choice of cutting up the panel into individual cards, or keeping the panel in-tact.

Individual cards are extremely difficult to find in mint condition.
