2002 Donruss Elite

Description

2002 Donruss Elite is a 268-card set, released in two series of 200 and 68 cards, respectively. The first 200 cards were released as part of the standard Donruss Elite series and is made up of 100 veteran players, 50 short-printed veterans and 50 rookie players. The 50 SPed veterans (101-150) were seeded into packs at a rate of 1:10. The rookie cards (151-200) are serial-numbered to 1500 copies with the first 150 die-cut and labeled "Turn of the Century." Some of the TotC cards are autographed.

The final 68 cards are part of the "Elite Extra Edition" subset, and were randomly inserted into Hobby packs of 2002 Donruss The Rookies. Each Elite Extra Edition card is serial-numbered to 1000 copies, with the first 100 copies autographed. Cards 256, 263 and 267-271 do not exist.

Elite: 20 packs per box, five cards per pack (MSRP: $3.99) Hobby only. 20 boxes per case.

The Rookies: 24 packs per box, five cards per pack.

Randomly inserted into issued of the March, 2002 issue of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly was a 2002 Donruss Elite sample card. The set parallels the first 100 cards in the base set and each card has the word "SAMPLE" printed in silver colored foil on the back. One out of every ten Sample cards is stamped in Gold foil.

Parallels

Status/Aspirations

Status and Aspirations are parallels of the 200-card base set. The Status is serial-numbered to the player's respective uniform number; while the Aspirations was numbered to 100 copies minus the uniform number.

Chicago National

These parallel cards were given away as part of a promotion at the 2002 National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Each of the first 200 base set cards featured a special Chicago National stamp, and is serial-numbered to five copies.

Inserts

All-Star Salutes

Each card is serial-numbered to the year in which they played in the All-Star Game. The first 100 copies are printed on a holographic foil.

Back to the Future

This 22-card insert set matches both current and future stars. Cards 1-8 feature two players and are serial-numbered to 500 copies, while cards 9-24 have only one player are were serial-numbered to 1000 copies.

Card number 6 was originally intended to feature Cardinals rookie So Taguchi paired up with Jim Edmonds and card number 20 was to feature Taguchi by himself, but both cards were pulled from the set before production was finalized, thus this set is complete at 22 cards.

Career Best

This 40-card set spotlights players who established career statistical highs in 2001. Each card is serial-numbered to a specific statistical achievement and the cards were randomly seeded into packs.

Passing the Torch

This 24-card insert set presents baseball legends and rising stars on double-sided holo-foil board. 500 serial-numbered copies of each dual-player card were produced. 1000 serial-numbered copies of single player card were produced.
