In late 1998, Playoff Inc., a manufacturer of football cards, purchased the assets of [[Pinnacle Brands]] out of bankruptcy.  Among the assets included the rights to the Donruss brand as that company had been acquired by Pinnacle in 1996.  In early 2001, around the same time they received licenses from MLB Properties and the MLBPA, the company renamed itself "Donruss-Playoff LP."
