2006 Topps Chrome is a 354-card parallel brand and was released in July, 2006. For the first time since 1997, Topps released Chrome in a single series.

1993 Cardtoons is a 95-card parody set intended for release in 1993, but not issued until over a year later. This completely unlicensed set uses cartoon caricatures on its fronts to parody then-active MLB players. The backs carry comical "career highlights" within silver-colored panels on the left sides and team logo caricatures on the right sides.

The first 252 cards in this set feature veterans done in the style of the 2006 Topps Baseball set; while cards numbered #253-#275 feature Award Winners and #276-#330 feature rookies. The final 24 cards (#331-#354) are all autographed rookies.
+
This product was the subject of a seven-year long court battle between the producers and the MLB Players Association -- a case eventually won by Cardtoons.

2006 was the first year of the MLBPA's new "Rookie Card" guidelines, and although all of the autographed and un-autographed "rookies" sport the standardized "ROOKIE CARD" icon, there are very few actual "true" rookie cards in 2006 ToppChro. One of the few true rookies, Kenji Johjima (Card #285), is also the sole player available on either an autographed or non-autographed card.

Each 24-pack Hobby box should yield two autographs, 14 Refractors, and a Box Topper containing a card serial-numbered to 90 or less.

2017 Topps Archives is a 300-card set, released May 31st. As has been this brand's trademark, one third of the base set is done in the style of the 1960 Topps set (which was the basis of 2009 Topps Heritage), one third as 1982 Topps (which was used as one of the designs in 2013 Topps Archives), and the final third 1992 Topps.

Topps' initial solicitation for 2017 Archives promised "wide-ranging improvements," and one such improvement (and a major one, if that) was the subtraction of "high-number" short-prints to the base set. In the previous two years, Archives was solicited as a 300 card base set without short-prints, only for Topps to deliver a final product with SPed base cards (30 in 2015 and ten in 2016). Another "addition-by-subtraction" improvement was the elimination of a celebrity/movie tie-in; replaced by a 23-card reprint insert of all of Derek Jeter's Topps Baseball base cards.

2017 Topps Inception is a 139-card set released May 19th, 2017. The product has been reconfigured from the previous year's product, yet still maintains the heavily Photoshop filtered look and feel. As the name suggests, the product has been re-branded from Bowman to Topps, and with that rebranding is a focus away from rookies and prospects and towards current Major League players.

2018 Topps Inception is a 100-card set released exclusively to Hobby outlets on June 27th. Each seven-card box will contain four base cards, two parallels, and an autograph.

A conventional base set has been added, and includes a 39-card Rookie Autographs subset. In addition, the number of autographs per box has been reduced from five to only one.

Each 16-box case should yield four Autographed Patches, one Autographed Jumbo Patch, and a Silver Signings card.

Originally, Inception was scheduled for a late March release; but Topps pushed it back three months.  Curiously, Shohei Ohtani does NOT have a Rookie Card in the product -- although he does have a few autographs.

Set of the Month

1993 Cardtoons is a 95-card parody set intended for release in 1993, but not issued until over a year later. This completely unlicensed set uses cartoon caricatures on its fronts to parody then-active MLB players. The backs carry comical "career highlights" within silver-colored panels on the left sides and team logo caricatures on the right sides.

This product was the subject of a seven-year long court battle between the producers and the MLB Players Association -- a case eventually won by Cardtoons.
