[[1978 Hostess]] is a 150-card set printed on the sides of boxes of various brands of Hostess snack cakes. The three-card panels (which 7 3/4" X 3 1/4") were designed to be cut-up into individual 2 1/4" X 3 1/4" cards. A custom album was available via mail order.

[[1993 Cardtoons]] is a 95-card parody set intended for release in 1993, but not issued until over a year later. This completely unlicensed set uses cartoon caricatures on its fronts to parody then-active MLB players. The backs carry comical "career highlights" within silver-colored panels on the left sides and team logo caricatures on the right sides.

This set contains a rookie-year card of Eddie Murray.
+
This product was the subject of a seven-year long court battle between the producers and the MLB Players Association -- a case eventually won by Cardtoons.

[[2016 Topps Archives Signature Series All-Star Edition]] was released exclusively to Hobby outlets August 30th, 2016. As with the [[2015 Topps Archives Signature Series|previous year's product,]] each box contains one encased autographed buyback card which is stamped as coming from this product and serial-numbered.

Rather than the plastic "slabs" Topps had used in the past (in brands like Topps Tribute and eTopps), each card is encased in an off-the-shelf BCW Mini Snap magnetic holder with a sticker sealing it shut. Since One Touch holders can only fit standard-sized (2 1/2" X 3 1/2") cards, all pre-1957 Topps cards (which measure 2 5/8" X 3 3/4") used in this product are encased in top-loaders.

As the subtitle of the product's name suggests, each player was at one point in their career an All-Star.  New for 2016 are multi-player autographs and autographed game-used Relic cards.

There appears to be a significant number deceased players -- some dead for over a decade.  It is unclear how Topps acquired these cards (i.e. whether these players signed for Topps before their death, or if these autographs were purchased by Topps from third-parties).

Set of the Month

1993 Cardtoons is a 95-card parody set intended for release in 1993, but not issued until over a year later. This completely unlicensed set uses cartoon caricatures on its fronts to parody then-active MLB players. The backs carry comical "career highlights" within silver-colored panels on the left sides and team logo caricatures on the right sides.

This product was the subject of a seven-year long court battle between the producers and the MLB Players Association -- a case eventually won by Cardtoons.

Just Released

2018 Bowman High Tek is a 56-card set released September 12th. All cards are printed on acetate with multiple background variations. Unlike the the previous year's product, a small selection of "true" rookie cards are included -- however, curiously, some players eligible to be RCs (e.g. Ronald Acuna, Jr. and Gleyber Torres) are still Prospects. Each ten-card box will yield four autographs and a parallel.

2018 Topps Luminaries was released September 7th. Each box contains one card, an autograph serial-numbered to 15 copies or fewer.

We estimate that only 625 12-box cases will be produced -- an increase of 100 cases from the previous year's product.

2018 Topps Diamond Icons was released August 29th. Each eight-card box will contain: one Relic, seven autographs, and a pair of autographed Relics. Every other box will yield a cut signature. All cards are serial-numbered to 25 copies or fewer.

2018 Topps Fire is a 200-card set released exclusively to Target outlets the week of August 27th.

2018 Panini Chronicles is a 60-card set released August 24th. As with the previous year's product, Chronicles features an original base set along with inserts based off other Panini brands -- including the first Score baseball cards in 20 years. Each six-pack Hobby box will contain three autographs and a game-used memorabilia card.

2018 Topps Archives was released exclusively to retail outlets the week of August 13th. The Hobby edition -- which was scheduled for released around the same time -- has been delayed until September.

The base set is 320 cards featuring designs from the 1959, 1977, and 1981 Topps sets.

2018 Panini Immaculate was released August 1st. Each six-card box will yield five autographs and/or game-used cards. All cards are serial-numbered to 99 copies or fewer.

2018 Topps Chrome was released August 1st. Each Hobby box will yield two autographs while each Jumbo box will have five autos.

2018 Donruss Optic was released July 18th. As usual, Optic is a 175-card chromium-stock take on the 2018 Donruss set. Each 20-pack Hobby box will yield 15 inserts/Prizm parallels, 15 Rated Rookie base cards, and two autographs.

Randomly seeded "Hot Boxes" will yield five autographs, or one serial-numbered Prizm per pack.

2018 Topps Allen & Ginter is a 350-card set, released the week of July 18th. As usual, each 24-pack Hobby box will include three of the following: Autographs, Relics, Rip Cards, or A&G Originals.

2018 Topps Big League is a 400-card set scheduled for release July 11th. It is a new product (replacing Topps BUNT), it is targeted toward young collectors.

2018 Topps Definitive Collection was released July 6th. An all "hit" product, each eight-card box will yield six on-card autographs and two Relics.

2018 Bowman Platinum is a 100-card set supplemented by a 100-card Top Prospects insert set, released in late June. For the third consecutive year, Bowman Platinum will be distributed exclusively to Walmart stores.

2018 Topps Museum Collection is a 100-card set released June 29th. Each pack will contain either an autograph or a relic. Each four-pack box will yield the following:

  • A Canvas Collection insert
  • A base set parallel
  • A Jumbo Relic
  • A Quad Relic
  • An Autograph
  • An Autographed Relic

2018 Stadium Club is a 300-card set released June 27th. Each 16-pack Hobby box will yield a pair of autographs.

2018 Topps Inception is a 100-card set released exclusively to Hobby outlets on June 27th. Each seven-card box will contain four base cards, two parallels, and an autograph.

Originally, Inception was scheduled for a late March release; but Topps pushed it back three months. Curiously, Shohei Ohtani does NOT have a Rookie Card in the product -- although he does have a few autographs.

2018 Topps Series Two was released June 13th.

2018 Finest is a 125-card set released by Topps on June 6th. Each box will yield two autographs.
