A 22-card set was issued by Donruss to promote the upcoming Studio set. Unlike the previous year's promo set, two-card packs were distributed directly to Hobby dealers and not included in that year's Donruss Factory set. Because of the method of distribution, this remains one of the rarest promo sets of the era.

The photos used in the Preview set are identical to that of the base set; however, the words "PREVIEW CARD" are printed on the back.

The Alomar and Smith cards are tougher to find than the other 20 cards in the set.

This 14-card set features current Major League players in "throwback" uniforms. The first eight cards were randomly inserted in 12-card wax packs, while cards 9-14 were seeded at the rate of one-per jumbo pack.
