1998 Stadium Club

Description

1998 Stadium Club is a 400-card set released in two series of 200 cards. For some strange reason, the first series is known as the "Odd Series" and contained the odd numbered base cards (1-399) and the Even Series included even numbered cards (2-400).

Two separate Cal Ripken, Jr. Sound Chip cards were distributed as box toppers in Home Team Advantage boxes.

Subsets include: Prime Rookies (even-numbered 332-354), Future Stars (odd-numbered 361-379), Draft Picks (odd-numbered 381-399) and Transactions (even-numbered 356-400).

Distribution

Retail: 24 packs per box, six cards per pack (MSRP: $2)

Hobby: 24 packs per box, nine cards per pack (MSRP: $3)

HTA: 11 packs plus one Cal Ripken, Jr. "Screenplay Sound Chip" card per box, 15 cards per pack (MSRP: $5)

Triumvirate

Trimuvirate is a 54-card die-cut set exclusive to retail packs. The set is grouped into 18, three-card "Triumvirates" (usually three players on the same team) with each individual card sequentially-numbered with an A, B, or C suffix. Each card is die-cut so that when all three cards in a Triumvirate are together, they form one larger card. Triumvirates T1-T8 are exclusive to Series One or "Odd Series" retail packs and have a "saw blade" design; while T9-T18 are in Even Series (Series Two) packs and have a "Glove" design.

Each card is available in three different editions.

• Luminous (Chrome finish)
• Luminescent (Chrome Refractor finish)
• Illuminator (Acetate card with Refractor-like finish)

Luminous is considered the "base" version with Luminescent and Illuminator as parallels. Luminescent and Illuminator can be difficult to differentiate, particularly when viewing online, or just from the front. The above pictures of Ken Griffey, Jr's. T16B show the easiest visual cue. Luminous and Luminescent (top) maintain a similar pattern across the entire back of the card. The Illuminator (bottom) features the silhouette of the player image from the front of the card.

Copyright information, MLB and MLBPA Logos, and card number are also moved from their normal locations on the back, to spaces that fit within the player's silhouette.

Cal Ripken, Jr. Screenplays Sound Chips

Packed into every HTA box as a box topper, is a lenticular card of Cal Ripken, Jr. Built into the card is a speaker and microchip containing around fifteen seconds of audio play-by-play. Card SC1 was inserted into every Odd Series HTA box, while card SC2 was put into each Even Series HTA box.

Autographs

Co-Signers

Exclusive to Hobby and HTA packs, this 36-card set features on-card autographs of two different players. Cards CS1-CS18 were in Odd Series packs, while CS19-CS36 were in the Even Series. Each player signed three different cards with three different players at three different scarcities. Group "A" cards are the scarcest while group "C" is the most available.

The specific odds of finding a Co-Signer are as follows.

NOTE: Sandy Alomar, Jr. told Beckett in 1998 that he and his brother Roberto signed only 25 copies of their Even Series Group A card -- although no cards in this set are serial-numbered. Based on this information, we estimate that the production of each Even Series Group B card is 75 copies, and each Even Series Group C card is 900 copies.
