2000 Ultra

Description

2000 Ultra is a 300-card set issued late in 1999. Each 10-card pack yielded one Gold Medallion parallel card, and every third pack an insert. Cards 251 through 300 make up a Prospects subset and were inserted one every four packs.

Distribution

Hobby: 24 packs per box, 10 cards per pack (MSRP: $2.69). Eight, 12, or 30 boxes per case.

Promos

Two separate Alex Rodriguez Promo cards were distributed to dealers and hobby media several weeks prior to the product's release. The first card features identical glossy card front stock as the basic Ultra 2000 product and has the words "PROMOTIONAL SAMPLE" running diagonally across the back of the card. The second, more scarce, card features a lenticular ribbed plastic card front (similar to a Sportflics card). Both promos share the same photo of Rodriguez as is used on A-Rod's 2000 Ultra base card.

Fresh Ink

Each Fresh Ink features an autograph signed on a silver sticker affixed to the card. 2000 Ultra Fresh Ink was one of The Hobby's first examples of a sticker autograph -- although the stickers were affixed before the player signed them. As was the firm's standard operating practice at the time, both the card and sticker are both embossed with a Fleer seal. The back of each card is hand-numbered.

Gold

Fresh Ink Gold is a parallel that was actually distributed in 2001 Fleer Platinum Rack Packs, but are cataloged here for easier reference. According to representatives at Fleer, twenty-five different 2000 Ultra Fresh Ink cards were featured in this set -- but Fleer never issued a complete checklist. All of the cards are hand-numbered "1/1" and feature a gold (rather than silver) foil signed sticker on front. Our checklist is incomplete at this time due to lack of information.
