2001 Fleer Tradition

Description

2001 Fleer Tradition is a 485-card set. The first 450 cards were released in early February, 2001 as part of the Fleer Tradition product. Subsets included: Prospects (351-380), League Leaders (381-410), World Series Highlights (411-420), and Team Checklists (421-450).

In lieu of an Update set, an additional 35 cards were tacked onto the factory set, which was released in late October, 2001.

Hobby: 36 packs per box, 10 cards per pack (MSRP: $1.99)

Stitches in Time

Stitches in Time is a 24-card insert features Negro League greats like Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige. This is one of the few sets of the modern era featuring these players depicted as members of Negro League clubs and is licensed by the Negro Leagues Hall of Fame & Museum.

NOTES

• Henry Kimbro's card is not sequentially-numbered. It is believed that Kimbro was to have been card #ST1, which does not exist.
• It was originally believed that card #ST3 (Cool Papa Bell) did not exist either; however, examples of the card have appeared on the secondary market. It is thought that the card possibly leaked to onto the secondary market after Fleer ceased operations.

Warning Track

NOTE: Cards #WT2 and WT5 (originally intended for Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks) were never produced, thus though numbered 1-25, the set is complete at 23 cards.

Uncut Sheet Redemptions

Randomly inserted into packs were 100 exchange cards in which lucky collectors received an uncut sheet of 2001 Fleer. These cards expired on March 1, 2002.

Autographs

This seven-card insert set features authentic autographs from Negro League legends. Willie Mays and Artie Wilson packed out as exchange cards with a redemption deadline of February 1st, 2002.

NOTE: Collectors should be advised that Fleer was unable to get Willie Mays to sign any of his Stitches in Time Autograph, as Mays refuses to sign anything depicting him as a Negro Leaguer. Unfortunately, Fleer did produce the card he was to have signed, complete with Certificate of Authenticity on the reverse side. These un-autographed Mays cards began to emerge on the secondary market shortly after Fleer's 2005 bankruptcy and some of these cards with Mays' forged signature have been known to appear on eBay from time to time.
