2003 Leaf

Description

2003 Leaf is a 329-card set issued in two separate releases. The primary Leaf product - containing the first 320 cards and most of the inserts - was released in February, 2003. This set includes the following subsets: Passing the Torch (251 to 270) and a Rookies subset (271-320). Unlike the previous year's product, all 320 base cards were printed in equal quantities. Cards 321-329 were issued within packs of 2003 DLP Rookies and Traded in December, 2003.

Jose Contreras, the Cuban refugee signed to a large free-agent contract by the Yankees, had his very first card in this set. There is no card #42 as both Bobby Higginson and Carlos Pena share card #41.

Distribution

Hobby/Retail: 24 packs per box, ten cards per pack (MSRP: $3). 20 boxes per case.

Promos

Randomly inserted into each copy of the March, 2003 issue of 'Beckett Baseball Card Monthly' was one 2003 Leaf promo card. The promo set parallels the entire 320-card Leaf Series base set, but with the word "SAMPLE" stamped in either Gold or Silver foil on the back. Approximately one-tenth of the Sample cards were stamped in Gold foil.

Passing Through Time

The Passing Through Time subset features players with a minimum of ten years experience. The reverse side of each card is a reprint of that player's 1993 Leaf base card.

Parallels

Each of the 329 base cards is available in the following parallels.

• Red Press Proof
• Blue Press Proof (serial-numbered to 50 copies)
• Green Throwback Logo (serial-numbered to 25)

The Green Throwback Logos were a "stealth" parallel. Each card has the mid-80s era "Green Leaf" logo on the front of the card.

Card Show Parallels

As part of a series of promotions, Donruss-Playoff gave away special parallels to collectors who attended one of three 2003 mega cardshows. A collector who opened three packs of any 2003 D-P baseball product at their booth would receive a special parallel card from one of a multitude of sets serial-numbered to only five copies.

Shows (and sets) were produced for the following cardshows:

• March, 2003 Chicago Sun-Times

• August, 2003 National Sports Collector's Convention in Atlantic City

• October, 2003 Orange County

Each card is embossed with the logo of the respective cardshow it was distributed at.

NOTE: Cards for the entire 320-card Leaf Series base set were distributed at all three shows; however, Chicago and Atlantic City versions for the nine cards distributed in DLP Rookie/Traded packs (cards #321-329) do not exist.

This set is done in the style of the 1960 Leaf set. The cards are also available in a foil parallel which is serial-numbered to 60 copies.

This 15-card set is was issued to promote the 2003 Leaf Certified Materials set, and features the same design of the base set -- the only difference is the "LC" prefix on each card number. Each card is also available in the following parallels.

These cards are autographed parallels of the player's respective base card -- just with an autographed sticker attached to the front. The Contreras was inserted into Leaf Series packs, while the remainder were in DLP Rookie/Traded packs. Each is serial-numbered to the production figures below.
