Description
1992 Ultra is a 600-card set released in two equal series of 300 cards. After a disappointing 1991 debut, Fleer greatly improved the look and feel of Ultra, putting it on a par with Topps' Stadium Club. Each card has a full-bleed (except for a marbleized bottom border) computer-generated design with glossy UV coating and gold-foil stamping. Collectors were enamored with the new look Ultra and it was one of the most successful products of 1992.

Tony Gwynn served as a spokesperson for Ultra was the exclusive subject of this 12-card vanity set, similar to Upper Deck's Baseball Heroes. The first ten cards of this set were randomly inserted in 1992 Ultra Series One packs and these cards are sequentially-numbered on the back as " X of 10." An additional two-cards were available through a mail-in offer. Collectors could receive the final two cards (sequentially-numbered as "Special Card #1" and "Special Card #2) for ten 1992 Ultra baseball wrappers plus $1.00 for shipping and handling. This offer was good through October 31st and, according to Fleer, over 100,000 sets were produced.

Tony Gwynn autographed an estimated 2000 cards from his vanity insert for insertion into Series One packs. Autographs for all ten cards in the series exist, but since the cards were not serial-numbered, it is unknown exactly how many of each individual card Gwynn signed -- it is assumed that Gwynn signed equal amounts of all ten cards.
Unlike the Roger Clemens cards that were inserted into 1992 Fleer packs, each autograph is embossed with a Fleer insignia.
