Description

1954 Topps is a 250-card set distributed in three series of 50, 25, and 175 cards, respectively. As was standard for the time, each card measures 2 5/8" by 3 3/4". This set contains the Rookie Cards of Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Tommy Lasorda, and Al Kaline. Topps was able to acquire the exclusive license for Ted Williams, and he appears on the first and last cards in the set, along with being featured on the box panel. While Topps gained Williams, they lost Mickey Mantle, who along with Roy Campanella and Pee Wee Reese, was the exclusive property of Bowman that year.

1954 marked the Topps debut of the recently relocated Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Braves, and the final appearance of the soon-to-be relocated Philadelphia Athletics.

On August 16th, 1954, Issue #1 of Sports Illustrated was published. Featured in this inaugural issue was a centerfold that featured reprints of 27 cards from the 1954 Topps Baseball set. On occasion, one can find this initial issue at various card shows or find the cards individually themselves; however, these "cards" were printed on the thin paper stock as the rest of the magazine.
