Description

2000 Topps Baseball is a 478-card set released in two equivilant series of 239 cards. Series One was released in December, 1999, while Series Two was issued in April, 2000.

The set includes the following subsets: Prospects (201-208/441-448), Draft Picks (209-220/449-455), Season Highlights (217-221/456-460), Post Season Highlights (222-228), 20th Century's Best (229-235/468-474), Magic Moments (236-240/475-479) and League Leaders (461-467).

The Magic Moments cards are similar, but not as extreme, as the Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa Home Run cards in 1999 Topps. Instead of making 70 or 66 different versions of each card, only five different versions of each card were made. Individually, each Magic Moment variation was produced in one-fifth the quantity of any other base card. Collectively, the production of the five Magic Moments cards for each player equal that of any other base card. A set is considered complete with only one of each Magic Moment card.

A reprint of Mark McGwire's 1985 Topps Rookie Card was inserted one every 36 hobby and retail first series packs and one every eight HTA first series packs.

Card number 7 was not issued as Topps continues to honor the memory of Mickey Mantle who wore that number during his career.

The only notable Rookie Card is a dual "Draft Pick" card of Ben Sheets and Barry Zito.

Factory Sets

In 2000 Topps released three different factory sets. 1) The traditional factory set that was made available both to Hobby outlets and mass-market retail store. 2) A "Home Team Advantage" factory set. And 3) a "Limited" factory set. Each factory set included only one of the five Magic Moment variations.

The HTA Factory set was (as the name suggests) exclusive to Hobby stores participating in the Home Team Advantage program. Each HTA factory set included all 478 base cards plus one Hank Aaron Chrome reprint. All of the base cards within Home Team Advantage factory sets were stamped with a special "HTA" gold foil logo on the card front. Oddly, cards 222-228 (Divisional Playoffs), 229-235 (20th Century's Best), 461-467 (League Leaders) and 468-474 (20th Century Best) did NOT feature the gold-foil HTA tag.

The Limited factory set was also exclusive to HTA stores and is comparable to the Topps Tiffany factory sets of the 1980s. Each factory set contained the complete 478 card basic Topps set plus the following insert sets: 21st Century Topps, Aaron Reprints, All-Star Rookie Team, All-Topps, Combos, Hands of Gold, Own the Game, Perennial All-Stars, Power Players and the Mark McGwire 1985 Reprint -- a total of 619 cards. Each card has thick gloss and features a "Limited Edition" gold foil stamp on front.

Stated print run was originally 6,000 serial numbered sets but actual production turned out to be 4,000 sets (with only 800 copies of each of the Magic Moments variation subset cards). Each factory box is serial-numbered but the individual cards are not numbered in any way. The sets were distributed in late September, 2000.

Parallels

MVP Promotion

This 400-card partial parallel (200 card in each series) was part of a contest. Every week in the 2000 season, Topps selected an MVP for the week and that player's card could then be exchanged for a 25-card set of all MVP winners. Each MVP card is limited to only 100 copies and collectors had until December 31, 2000 to exchange their winning MVP cards.

Series One parallels cards #1-#201 (except card #44) and Series Two parallels #241-#440.

The following MVP Promotion cards were designated by Topps to be "winners:" 13, 15, 45, 50, 53, 55, 60, 72, 87, 90, 93, 107, 109, 116, 148, 165, 180, 199, 250, 271, 350, 395, 398, 403 and 427. Since Topps destroyed these Winner exchange cards once they received them, they're in noticeably shorter supply than other cards from this set. Despite this fact, no noticeable premiums in secondary trading levels have been detected for these cards.

20th Century's Best Numbered

This 14-card set partially-parallels the 20th Century's Best subset. Each card is serial-numbered to their specific stat.

Randomly inserted into Series One packs is a reprint of Mark McGwire's 1985 Topps rookie card. To distinguish the reprint from his actual 1985 card, each reprint has a gold-foil stamp.

For their year 2000 product, Topps chose to reprint cards of All-Time Home Run King, Hank Aaron. The even year cards were released in the first series and the odd year cards were issued in the second series. Each card can be easily detected from the original cards issued from the 1950-70s by the large gold foil logo on front and the glossy card stock.

The set was also available in Chrome and Chrome Refractor parallels. The odd numbered years were in Series One packs, while the even numbered years were in Series Two.
