Description

1959 Topps (R-414-13) is a 572-card set released in seven series -- the largest Topps set to date. Compared to other Topps sets of the era, 1959 is relatively easy to build and affordable -- due to the lack of premiere rookie cards (Bob Gibson and Sparky Anderson notwithstanding).

For the first time since 1954, Ted Williams does not appear in the set, as he signed with Fleer who issued their own Williams-centric product.

Stan Musial finally appeared on his first Topps card (#150)

Distribution

Penny Packs: 120 packs per box, one card plus one stick of gum (MSRP: $0.01).

Wax: 24 packs per box, five cards plus one stick of gum (MSRP: $0.05).

Cello: 36 packs per box, 12 cards per pack (MSRP: $0.10).

Parallels

Series Three Gray Backs

All 88 cards from Series Three (#199-286) were printed on either a lighter, "white" cardstock, or a darker "gray" stock. Both appear to be in equal quantity.

Venezuelan

Topps issued a partial-parallel of the first 196 cards of their annual baseball set for the Latin American market. The cards have the same design as the "American" cards, but were printed on a thinner (much thinner) cardstock. Some, but not all, cards have "Impreso en Venezuela por Benco Co." printed on the reverse side; however, some cards still have "T.C.G. PRINTED IN THE U.S.A."
