Description
1997 Topps is a 495-card set released in two series of 275 and 220 cards, respectively.
Card 42 is a special Jackie Robinson tribute card commemorating the 50th anniversary of his contribution to baseball history and numbered for his Dodgers uniform number.
Topps announced in 1996 that beginning in 1997, card number 7 would no longer exist in future Topps Baseball sets; it would be "retired" in honor of Mickey Mantle. Card number 84 does not exist because Mike Fetters' card was incorrectly numbered 61. Card number 277 does not exist because Chipper Jones' card was incorrectly numbered 276.
Due to the popularity of the Mickey Mantle reprint cards in the previous year's set, 1997 featured reprints of all 27 of Willie Mays' Topps cards. "Willie Mays seemed the next logical progression after Mickey Mantle. He was a contemporary of Mantle's, those two names often are spoken together, and Mays remains a special name in our hearts here at Topps," said Topps spokesman, Marty Appel at the time. Further, the sixteen other Mickey Mantle Topps and Bowman cards that did not appear in the 1996 set (e.g. All-Star and multi-player cards) were included for '97.
Rookie Cards include Kris Benson (#481) and Eric Chavez (#479).
Card #333 is the final card of Eddie Murray.
Factory sets were produced, but in much more limited quantity than in previous years.

This 27-card set reprints reprints vintage Willie Mays Topps and Bowman cards. Each card front is highlighted by a special commemorative gold foil stamp. Randomly inserted in first series hobby packs only (at the rate of one in 2,400) are personally signed cards (see below).
The "base" cards were inserted into Series One packs, while Finest and Finest Refractor versions were in Series Two.

A special 4 1/4" by 5 3/4" jumbo reprint of the 1952 Topps Willie Mays card was made available exclusively in special Series One Wal-Mart Blaster boxes. Each box (shaped much like a cereal box) contained ten eight-card retail packs and the aforementioned jumbo card and retailed for $10.
Hobby Masters
Exclusive to Hobby packs, this 20-card set honors players picked by Hobby dealers from across the country as the best players in card collecting. Cards #HM1-HM10 were issued in Series One packs and #HM11-HM20 in Series Two. Printed on 28-point diffraction foilboard, one card replaces two regular cards when inserted in packs.

Mays signed about 65 copies of nineteen different reprint cards; however these cards are NOT serial-numbered. On each card, the foil-stamped Willie Mays logo found on all the regular reprint inserts has been replaced by Topps' "Certified Autograph Issue" stamp.
Unfortunately, counterfeits have surfaced on the secondary market. On these copies, both the autograph and Topps’ “Certified Autograph Issue” stamp are fake. Counterfeit Certified Autograph Issue stamps have a thicker font on the word ‘Autograph’ and specifically, the “g” and “r” will touch. In contrast, legitimate Certified Auto stamps feature thin letter fonts and there is clear space between the “g” and “r” letters in ‘Autograph’.
